Let us introduce to you some building materials that can improve the comfort of your home and yet have little negative impact on the environment.

Come back to check out our monthly features!

Product: Awnings (retractable/open & close system)

Application:

The retractable awnings are made of strong fabrics with aluminium arms that can be handled manually or by a motor that can open and close! Awnings are useful to block direct sunlight which is one of the main causes of "hot houses" but can also prevent the quick release of heat from the house when outdoors are cooler. With flexible awnings, you will be able to achieve the best of both worlds.

Previous features:

UV and Infrared filters/ glass coating - More commonly used in cars, this layer of filter can also be installed on existing glass of buildings to cut out infrared light that contributes to heat but does not block light as would tinted films.

Bamboo/ wood blinds - Used as a shade to prevent direct sunlight from heating up your house. Useful for windows that face east or west. Those that can be rolled away for cloudy days ensure you get maximum view of your garden.

Solar water heater - Used to heat water for household or industrial use. Consists of a black panel that absorbs heat and copper or vacuum glass tubes to transport water for heating. Those that utilises thermosiphon instead of pumps are totally electricity independant.

Project Funder: DANIDA

Partner Organisation: OVE

More previous features:

Glass Block - Used as facade or interior walls to allow light to pass through without transferring heat. Will reduce energy used for lighting without increasing cost of cooling.

Rockwool - Used as an insulating material for the roof or on walls. Also good for noise control and fire protection. Proper insulation can reduce a building's requirement for cooling and electricity usage.
